Nanton March 2023 Consultation Sessions Summary

On March 2, 2023 Livingstone Range School Division held three consultation sessions to understand what is important to our stakeholders for a modern high school in Nanton. We thank those who participated in each of our sessions, including:

  • 20 Grade 5-6 students
  • 26 Grade 9-11 students
  • 23 community members

We also had 12 LRSD staff and 3 Trustees attend the community session and act as observers, facilitators, and recorders.

From the reports provided by the session facilitators we see themes emerge about what will make a great high school:

  • Culture - A place where everyone belongs and feels safe, where there are leadership opportunities, mental health supports, and good teachers, and where principle-centered decision-making creates a strong school spirit.
  • Facility - A building with open common and flexible spaces, natural light, and fresh air, which is accessible to all and has a large gymnasium with spectator seating.
  • Programming - A high school that offers more access to option classes, sports and athletics, fine and performing arts, and Career & Technology Studies (CTS), and that teaches life skills courses including leadership and financial literacy.
  • Community - A school-community connection with shared spaces, students who volunteer in the community, and community support for students through sports funding and student work experience.

All session participants were asked to share their โ€˜Gotโ€™ out of the engagement experience and what they still โ€˜Wantโ€™ after the session. Some typical comments include:

  • "Everybody's voice was heard."
  • "I feel very excited for the new schools!"
  • "Very interactive and involving."
  • "I got more of a vision of what a new place for students could be like."
  • "Great community involvement!"
  • "I want more information about what is going to happen to our schools."
  • "Let students talk in more detail about why they want certain things"
  • "Want to do this for the elementary school."

Livingstone Range School Division will use the results from these engagement sessions as we make decisions about programming and design for the modernized Nanton High School.

We thank all those who participated for their important input and look forward to ongoing consultation with the students, staff, parents, and community members in Nanton.
